The Secret Circle The Divide Chapter 1 Free Essays
Adamââ¬â¢s car windows were foggy with the heat of their breath. It was a balmy night at dusk, and the air was scented with early signs of spring ââ¬â a perfect night to roll down the windows and enjoy the breeze while they kissed. But Cassie insisted the windows stay closed, for privacy. We will write a custom essay sample on The Secret Circle: The Divide Chapter 1 or any similar topic only for you Order Now Besides, she liked the feeling of being cocooned in such close quarters with Adam, insulated from the outside world by the steamy glass. They were going to be late for their meeting, but inside this cloud, she didnââ¬â¢t care. ââ¬Å"We should go in,â⬠she said halfheartedly. ââ¬Å"Just five more minutes. Itââ¬â¢s not like they can start without you.â⬠Right, Cassie thought, because Iââ¬â¢m a leader. All the more reason not to be late because Iââ¬â¢m making out with my boyfriend. Boyfriend. The notion still made her giddy, even after all these weeks. She watched the way the setting sun brought out the multicolored highlights in Adamââ¬â¢s tangled hair ââ¬â shades of burgundy and orange ââ¬â and the crystal ine sparkle in his blue eyes. He leaned in and softly kissed that spot on the side of Cassieââ¬â¢s neck just below her ear. ââ¬Å"Fine,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Three more minutes.â⬠Their first kiss as a couple had changed everything for Cassie. It meant something. Adamââ¬â¢s lips on hers felt deliberate and momentous, like an agreement, and Cassieââ¬â¢s whole body became aware of that fact. This was love, sheââ¬â¢d realized. Cassie assumed the sensation would lessen as the days passed, that their kissing would become routine and habitual, but it hadnââ¬â¢t. If anything, its intensity increased over time. Parked now just outside the old lighthouse on Shore Road, Cassie knew they had to stop kissing, but she couldnââ¬â¢t. And neither could Adam. The quickening of his breath and the pressing urgency of his grip on her hips made that obvious. But it wouldnââ¬â¢t look good to walk in late to her first meeting as a Circle leader. ââ¬Å"We really have to go in,â⬠she said, pulling away and placing her hand up against Adamââ¬â¢s chest to hold him still. He took a deep breath and exhaled through his mouth, trying to cool himself down. ââ¬Å"I know.â⬠Reluctantly, he let Cassie disentangle from his embrace and make herself more presentable. After a few more deep breaths and a swift patting down of his wild hair, he followed her inside. Walking across the long-grassed meadow that led to the old lighthouse, Cassie couldnââ¬â¢t help but be struck by its worn, rustic beauty. Melanie had told them it dated back to the late 1700s, and its age was evident in its dilapidated appearance. The tower itself was constructed of grayed stone and brick reaching almost ninety feet high, but at its base was a small, crumbling wooden house ââ¬â the lightkeeperââ¬â¢s cottage. It had been built for the lightkeeperââ¬â¢s wife and children, so they could be close to him while he saw to his duties upstairs. According to Melanie, the cottage was passed down through several generations until the lighthouse was finally decommissioned in the early 1900s. Since then, there had been talk of converting it into a museum, but it had remained abandoned for decades. Adam smiled at her, and her breath caught in her throat. She unlatched the cottage door and stepped inside, Adam just behind her. With an almost audible whoosh, the Circleââ¬â¢s focus shifted to her grand, belated entrance. It was immediately obvious that theyââ¬â¢d kept the group waiting for too long, and that the group knew exactly what she and Adam had been doing. Cassie examined all of their faces, absorbing their different reactions and silent accusations. Melanieââ¬â¢s usually cool eyes contained a heated impatience, and Laurel shyly giggled. Deborah, sitting on the edge of the wooden bench in the corner, appeared ready to make a snide comment, but before she had the chance, Chris and Doug Henderson, whoââ¬â¢d been playing catch with a tennis ball by the window, said in unison, ââ¬Å"Well, itââ¬â¢s about frigging time.â⬠Nick, sitting on the floor with his back against the wall, looked at Cassie with a subtle pain in his eyes that forced her to turn away. ââ¬Å"Adam,â⬠Faye said, in her lazy, husky voice, ââ¬Å"your lip gloss is smudged.â⬠The room broke out with uncontrollable laughter, and Adamââ¬â¢s face reddened. Diana stared straight down at the floor, humiliated for them, or perhaps for herself. Sheââ¬â¢d been gracious about Adam being with Cassie now, but there was only so much a girl could take. ââ¬Å"We call this meeting to order,â⬠Diana said, regaining her poise. ââ¬Å"Everyone, please be seated.â⬠Diana spoke as if the laughter had died down, but it was still loud and raucous. ââ¬Å"The first order of business,â⬠she continued, ââ¬Å"is what weââ¬â¢re going to do with the Master Tools.â⬠That quieted the group. The Master Tools ââ¬â the diadem, the silver bracelet, and the leather garter ââ¬â had belonged to Black Johnââ¬â¢s original coven. Theyââ¬â¢d been hidden for hundreds of years until Cassie figured out they were concealed within the fireplace in her grandmotherââ¬â¢s kitchen. The Circle had used the Tools to defeat Black John, but theyââ¬â¢d put off making any decisions regarding them since. Tonight, the time had come to determine their fate. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s right,â⬠Cassie said, joining Diana in the center of the room. ââ¬Å"We have real power now. And we need to ââ¬â â⬠What? What did they need to do? Cassie turned to Diana. Her green eyes and shining hair were radiant, even in the ghostly lantern light of the old cottage. If anyone knew what the Circle should do next, it was Diana. ââ¬Å"I think we should destroy the power of the Master Tools somehow,â⬠Diana said in her clear, musical voice. ââ¬Å"So no one can use them.â⬠For a moment, nobody spoke. They were all too shocked by this suggestion. Then Faye broke the silence. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve got to be kidding me,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"You and Adam have spent half your lives trying to find the Master Tools.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠Diana said. ââ¬Å"But after all weââ¬â¢ve been through, and now that weââ¬â¢ve defeated Black John, I feel like that much power canââ¬â¢t be good for us, or for anyone.â⬠Cassie was as surprised as Faye. These words didnââ¬â¢t sound like Diana at all, or at least not like the Diana that Cassie had known. Adam appeared taken aback as well, but he kept quiet. Leaders spoke first. Those were the rules. Cassie felt the attention of the group settle upon her. They were a triumvirate now, which meant her power was equal to both Dianaââ¬â¢s and Fayeââ¬â¢s. She wanted to use her authority well, to state her opinion openly and intelligently, but she didnââ¬â¢t want to go against Diana. ââ¬Å"What made you change your mind?â⬠she said. Diana crossed her thin arms over her chest. ââ¬Å"People change their minds all the time, Cassie.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well,â⬠Faye said, focusing on Diana with her honey-colored eyes, ââ¬Å"I disagree entirely. It would be a waste to not use the Tools. At the very least, we should experiment with them.â⬠Her mouth formed a cruel smile. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t you agree, Cassie?â⬠ââ¬Å"Um,â⬠she said. It was weird. Cassie kind of agreed with Faye on this one, which may have been the first time she ever agreed with Faye on anything. She didnââ¬â¢t want to side with Faye over Diana, but how could they just destroy the Tools? What if Black John came back? These were their only means of self-defense. She wished Diana had discussed this with her before now. ââ¬Å"We can talk to Constance for help getting rid of them,â⬠Diana offered. ââ¬Å"If thatââ¬â¢s what we decide to do.â⬠Melanieââ¬â¢s great-aunt Constance had been helping the Circle with their magic. Since sheââ¬â¢d tapped into her powers to nurse Cassieââ¬â¢s mother back to health last winter, sheââ¬â¢d become more willing to share her knowledge of the old ways. ââ¬Å"Constance probably knows a spell we can use,â⬠Diana said. ââ¬Å"And with Black John gone for good, I bet sheââ¬â¢ll agree itââ¬â¢s time to put the Tools to rest.â⬠Cassie could see Diana felt strongly about this. As did Faye ââ¬â that familiar fiery anger had snuck its way into her sharp features. ââ¬Å"We should take a vote,â⬠a strong voice called out. It belonged to Nick, who rarely spoke at Circle meetings. Hearing him express an opinion on this caught Cassie off guard. ââ¬Å"Nickââ¬â¢s right,â⬠Melanie said. ââ¬Å"We should all have equal say in a decision so important.â⬠Diana nodded. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m fine with that.â⬠Faye dramatically swept her red nails at the group. ââ¬Å"Vote then,â⬠she said, with the confidence of someone whoââ¬â¢d already won. Melanie stood and stepped to the center of the room. She always called out Circle votes, Cassie noticed. ââ¬Å"All those in favor of destroying the Master Tools,â⬠she said, ââ¬Å"raise your hands.â⬠Dianaââ¬â¢s hand went up first, followed by Melanieââ¬â¢s own, then Laurelââ¬â¢s. After a second long pause, Nick raised his, and then finally Adam. Cassie couldnââ¬â¢t believe it. Adam had voted with Diana, even though she knew heââ¬â¢d rather experiment with the Tools. ââ¬Å"All those in favor of keeping the Tools,â⬠Melanie said, ââ¬Å"raise your ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Wait,â⬠Cassie called out. Sheââ¬â¢d gotten distracted and lost the chance to choose Dianaââ¬â¢s side. Faye laughed. ââ¬Å"You snooze, you lose, Cassie. And a vote against Diana is a vote for me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Wrong,â⬠Cassie said, surprising herself as she said it. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a vote for me.â⬠She paused to look at Adam and saw he was smiling proudly. ââ¬Å"I propose a third option,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"We keep the Tools, in case we need them. We donââ¬â¢t destroy their power, but we also donââ¬â¢t experiment with them.â⬠ââ¬Å"In that case,â⬠Faye said, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d be happy to keep the Tools safe until we need them.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not a chance,â⬠Adam said. Cassie raised her hand. ââ¬Å"I wasnââ¬â¢t finished.â⬠She eyed Faye and then Diana. ââ¬Å"I propose that each leader hide one of the three relics, so they can only be used if the whole group knows about it.â⬠Everyone got quiet then, as they mulled over this new possibility in their minds. It was a good idea, and Cassie knew it. What she didnââ¬â¢t know was how sheââ¬â¢d come up with it right there on the spot like that. When she took control of the floor, she hadnââ¬â¢t had the slightest idea what she was going to say. Diana spoke first. ââ¬Å"That does seem like a fair compromise,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Melanie, I call for a revote.â⬠ââ¬Å"I second the call for a revote,â⬠Nick said gall antly. Melanie raised her eyebrows. ââ¬Å"Okay then. All those in favor of . . . Cassieââ¬â¢s idea, raise your hands.â⬠All hands went up, except for Deborahââ¬â¢s, Suzanââ¬â¢s, and Fayeââ¬â¢s. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s decided then,â⬠Melanie said. Faye stood perfectly still. She didnââ¬â¢t move a muscle, but a dark shadow fell over her face. Suzan bounced out of her chair. ââ¬Å"Oh, well,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"I guess thatââ¬â¢s that. Iââ¬â¢m starving. Can we go eat now?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, letââ¬â¢s go get tacos,â⬠Sean said. One by one, everyone stood up and began gathering their things, talking about meeting at Melanieââ¬â¢s great-aunt Constanceââ¬â¢s later to practice their invocations. Diana snuffed out the candles and turned down the lanterns. All the while, Faye remained motionless. ââ¬Å"You,â⬠she said. Instinctively, Cassie took a step back even though Faye was across the room. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t be too proud of yourself.â⬠She sauntered over to Cassie and leaned in close. Cassie could smell her heady perfume, and it made her dizzy. ââ¬Å"You may have won the battle,â⬠Faye said. ââ¬Å"But . . . well, you know.â⬠Cassie drew away from Fayeââ¬â¢s reach. Her fear still got the best of her every time Faye threatened her. Whether or not Faye was actually stronger was beside the point. She had the singleness of mind of a sociopath and a complete lack of conscience. Faye couldnââ¬â¢t be reasoned with, and that was what made her dangerous. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re on the same side,â⬠Cassie said weakly. ââ¬Å"We want the same thing.â⬠Faye narrowed her honey-colored eyes. ââ¬Å"Not really,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Not yet, anyway.â⬠It sounded like a threat, and Cassie knew Faye never made an empty threat. Male and Female Attitudes towards Cars
For more than a century, one of the key possessions of a successful person has been defined as a car. The American dream cannot be complete without it, and neither can the European. The meaning of cars can range from mere means of transportation for a busy employee or the one taking the family out on a picnic to an item of prestige and luxury, confirming the status of its owner.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Male and Female Attitudes towards Cars specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Following the traditional stereotypes, society ascribes different gender attitudes to cars: as a rule, cars are seen connected with the rougher sex. But as the redistribution of gender roles takes place, women are becoming more and more involved with owning and driving cars, which leads to reconsideration of traditional female and male attitudes towards automobiles. Obviously, nowadays the standard female and male attitudes to cars can be described as connected with the notions of practicality and entertainment correspondingly. Paradoxically enough, contradicting the widespread idea of women going rather for design than quality of their automobile, facts show that an average female places immense importance on the practical aspect of her car. According to the research conducted by Forbes, the new-car registration data for United States for September 2009 to late January 2010 testifies that the majority of women go for ââ¬Å"practical crossovers like the Kia Sportage and the Honda CR-Vâ⬠(Elliot 1). Such interest to reliable practical models can be explained to a certain extent by female unwillingness to involve in the complex maintenance procedures which may be more frequent with cars of a less practical and more aesthetic profile. All the manipulations with oiling, wheeling, and other mechanical maintenance procedures are traditionally viewed as ââ¬Ëthe guysââ¬â¢ thingsââ¬â¢ and are not typical for a female to perform. Therefore females prefer reliable models which run low risks in terms of technical maintenance. On the contrary, in their choice of car the males appear to digress from the rationality and practicality traditionally ascribed to them, and to strive for explicitly brawny and powerful models. The same study has showed that the ââ¬Å"list of the top five autos most popular with men is dominated by trucks, from the heavy-duty Ford F-350 to the lightweight Ford Rangerâ⬠(Elliot 2). The desire of power is not bolstered with any practical consideration, since the overly powerful vehicles are actually never used to their full capacity.Advertising Looking for essay on gender studies? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More But the inherent need to physically dominate provokes men to acquire most powerful cars even if there is no need for that force in practical conditions. Maintaining the image of a ââ¬Ëtough guyà ¢â¬â¢, a male simply needs to know that his automobile in capable of almost incredible towing loads. This instinctive desire of power explains why Camaro ââ¬â 426 horsepower in the SS version ââ¬â is the most popular non-truck among male buyers (Elliot 2). As remarked by Aaron Gold, a Los Angeles-based automotive journalist, ââ¬Å"A guy will say, ââ¬ËLet me get this BMW because itââ¬â¢s really fast and will make people think my penis is bigger. [â⬠¦] A guy will say ââ¬ËI can do zero to 60 in six seconds!ââ¬â¢ Well when was the last time you went from 0 to 60 in six seconds?!â⬠(as cited in Elliot 2). This illustrates the male mode of thinking and the male attitude to cars as a means of stating, expressing and promoting their masculinity, as well as establishing their social dominance by inherent automobile power which is hardly applied in practice. The aforementioned difference in female and male perception of car as a practical or an entertaining ite m reflects the corresponding interpretations of car functions. By large, women tend to perceive cars as purely utilitarian, functional devices. The qualities women seek in car first and foremost are comfort, safety, and relative inexpensiveness. Comfort in female perception is not connected with luxury and splendor but is a sign of the carââ¬â¢s reliability. Connected to it is safety, which guarantees both physical and emotional comfort. A demonstrative example for the female demand for comfort and safety is the presence of such safety measure as child lock system. The latter is needed since women perceive cars as a means of transportation for not only individuals but also their families, in particular, children. Women are not prone to spending huge amounts of finance on car maintenance; therefore they opt for reasonably-priced models, spending their money on fashionable clothes or designer interior instead. On the contrary, men perceive cars as an important detail of their image and the sign of their social success and prestige. Instigated by the need to possess a vehicle representative of their achievements, men choose large upmarket models that inspire respect from the others. In this desire to secure a high social status, men do not care how large sums they spend on maintenance of their giant and are ready to invest almost unlimitedly in the token of their prestige.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Male and Female Attitudes towards Cars specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More As a designer bag or tasty interior are important to women, so is a luxury car significant and revealing of male success and ability to lead and dominate. Therefore, men spare no finance to achieve and maintain their status by such a means of demonstrating their accomplishment as their personal car. The image of the car as perceived by women is therefore that of a ââ¬Ëworking horseââ¬â¢. The most widespread appli cation of cars by women are taking children to kindergarten or school, doing the shopping or taking the family out for a picnic. The task of getting the woman to work is almost lost in those family-related activities and does not presuppose showing off a new luxury model in front of the colleagues. Exceptions can be made for higher-level business ladies, but their perceptions are by large influenced by the stereotypes typical for male-dominated world, therefore they cannot be taken into account for discussion of purely female attitudes to cars. Opposed to womenââ¬â¢s utilitarian perception of car as a means of transportation for meeting everyday needs, men possess a much more personalized view of their vehicles. It is not infrequent that men feminize their cars and call them ââ¬Å"my babeâ⬠, which reflects a high level of intimacy between a man and his car. A Craze for Cars article reflects the typical kind of indestructible bond that establishes between men and their cars: ââ¬Å"He knows your likes and dislikes. He knows your strengths and weaknesses. You told him the things you can never share with your best friends alsoâ⬠(Tereza n.p.). Men tend to view cars as their partners and friends, and often invest not only money but also emotional energy in them. Moreover, contrary to female perception of cars, men tend to see them as ways of entertainment and thus undertake ââ¬Ëfun drivesââ¬â¢ simply to feel the power of the engine growling in the heart of their four-wheeled monster. Attitudes to cars reflect typical perceptional differences of the two sexes. While women interpret cars as practical, utilitarian objects that are created for work, men tend to see their automobiles as powerful expression of their masculinity and social prestige, and therefore often undertake a personal approach to the four-wheeled friend. It should be remarked, however, that with the gender roles changing throughout the time, typical male and female attitudes to c ars tend to merge, acquiring a more unified character for both genders. How to Become an Anesthesia Technician
How to Become an Anesthesia Technician When you think about surgery, you might think of the scene how itââ¬â¢s often portrayed on TV- a surgeon, plus one or two nurses assisting. In reality, surgery requires a team of professionals: people to set up the operating room and equipment, someone to prep the patient, at least one surgeon, surgical nurses, surgical assistants, and (last but not least) anesthesiologists and anesthesia technicians who ensure that the patient is out cold and feels none of the pain of whatââ¬â¢s going on. Every team member is an essential part of every surgery. All of these surgical team professionals have a major part to play in the healthcare industry, so if youââ¬â¢re looking for a solid healthcare career path, itââ¬â¢s time to think about whether you should become an anesthesia technician. The Role of Anesthesia TechniciansAn anesthesia technician (ââ¬Å"techâ⬠for short) is an allied health professional who works with the anesthesiologist and other operating room team members t o make sure that patients are sedated and properly anesthetized before surgery. Anesthesia technicians handle many of the practical (technical) details of anesthetizing patients, allowing the anesthesiologist to focus more fully on the patientââ¬â¢s needs. Anesthesia techniciansââ¬â¢ responsibilities may include:Preparing equipment in the operating roomMaintaining equipment and troubleshooting as necessaryTesting and maintaining equipment ahead of surgeryManaging operating room supply inventoryPreparing anesthesia drugs under the direction of the anesthesiologistConnecting and operating equipment that monitors patientsââ¬â¢ vital signs during surgeryAssisting with IVs and airway devicesHelping to transfer patients to post-op care roomsBasically, if it involves patient anesthesia or monitoring patients while theyââ¬â¢re under sedation, the anesthesia tech has a hand in it. Anesthesia techs typically work in hospital settings, but they may also be found in private clinics/ doctorsââ¬â¢ offices or outpatient care facilities. The BenefitsBecoming an anesthesia technician brings many of the benefits of an allied health career path:A growing industry. The healthcare field is expanding all the time, with greater demand for medical professionals at every level.A varied day-to-day. Patients change, their needs change, and every day has its own set of challenges.A stable work environment. Hospitals will always need to be staffed with qualified professionals, and typically provide a clean, quiet workspace.A path for advancement. Working as an anesthesia tech opens the door to other healthcare/surgical jobs, especially with certification. No four-year degree required. Anesthesia technicians usually have a high school degree plus specialized training and classes. The QualificationsBecause anesthesia technicians are working in a high-stress environment and handling life-or-death details, this is a job that has some very specific requirements. After all, you donâ â¬â¢t want Joe Schmo off the street holding your vital signs in his hands while youââ¬â¢re on the operating table. As an anesthesia tech, you can expect these preliminary requirements:A high school degree (or equivalent), minimumAn associateââ¬â¢s degree in an accredited Anesthesia Tech program may be preferredCompletion of a training program and at least 1 year of clinical internships and apprenticeshipsFor more on schools and training programs that offer degrees for Anesthesia Technicians, see the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) for the most up-to-date information on available programs.Anesthesia technicians may also choose to get certified by the ASATT. To get this certification, youââ¬â¢d need to pass the ASATTââ¬â¢s national certification exam, in addition to having a high school diploma, 2+ years of experience, and completion of an anesthesia tech program or degree that includes clinical training. The certification is optional , but it could help with career advancement and give anesthesia techs an edge when it comes to seeking more opportunities in the field. This is also a job that requires a rather specific skill set. If youââ¬â¢re thinking about becoming an anesthesia technician, you should have these skills (or be willing to build them in the meantime):Verbal and written communication skillsProblem solving skills in high-pressure situationsComputer skillsComfortà with technology and mechanicsBiomedical equipment skillsA background in math, science, pharmacology, and medical terminologyMaking the DecisionIf youââ¬â¢ve got the baseline skills and are thinking of committing to this path of becoming an anesthesia technician, itââ¬â¢s time to think about the whole picture. Are you comfortable in a fast-paced, pressure-filled medical environment with potential crisis situations? Are you extremely detail-oriented?Are you unfazed by blood and bodily fluids in your professional environment? Are you abl e to keep calm and do what you need to do no matter whatââ¬â¢s going on around you?Can you commit to the education and training it takes to become an anesthesia tech? Can you work well as a member of a team and under the direction of doctors and surgeons?Do you have good mechanical skills and a knack for troubleshooting tricky equipment? Are you willing and able to keep on top of medical equipment and technology trends? If the answer to all of these is ââ¬Å"yes,â⬠then you should seriously consider pursuing a career in anesthesia technician. If youââ¬â¢re seeing a lot of ââ¬Å"maybeâ⬠s, ââ¬Å"probablyâ⬠s, or ââ¬Å"uhhhhâ⬠¦noâ⬠s, then the good news is that there are tons of other healthcare career opportunities that might fit you better. The OutlookOnce youââ¬â¢ve figured out whether youââ¬â¢re personally equipped to make this your career path, you also need to figure out if itââ¬â¢s worth your future investment- after all, you donââ¬â¢t wan t to invest your time, energy, and education money in a career thatââ¬â¢s going to stall out on you down the line. Like most other healthcare fields, the demand for anesthesia techs is growing; the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that jobs in related surgical technology fields will grow by about 15% by 2024. And not only is the field stable, but itââ¬â¢s also a solid salary choice as well: $38,700 is the median salary. Certified anesthesia technicians can make more, as can techs with significant experience, so there are plenty of opportunities for growth and advancement once youââ¬â¢re in the door.If you decide that becoming an anesthesia technician is the path for you, great! Youââ¬â¢re on your way to a demanding-but-fulfilling career. Good luck!

Definition of a Prepositional Verb and How to Use One
Definition of a Prepositional Verb and How to Use One A prepositional verb is an idiomatic expression that combines a verb and a preposition to make a new verb with a distinct meaning. Some examples of prepositional verbs in English are care for, long for, apply for, approve of, add to, resort to, result in, count on,Ã and deal with. The preposition in a prepositional verb is generally followed by a noun or pronoun, and thus prepositional verbs are transitive. Examples and Observations God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools. (John Muir, The American Forests. The Atlantic Monthly, 1897)The difference between the old ballplayer and the new ballplayer is the jersey. The old ballplayer cared about the name on the front. The new ballplayer cares about the name on the back. (Steve Garvey)I believe in equality for everyone, except reporters and photographers. (Mahatma Gandhi) Prepositional verbs consist of a transitive verb plus a preposition with which it is closely associated. He stared at the girl. She finally decided on the blue car. Prepositional verbs do not take the particle movement rule. The verb and the following preposition can be separated by an adverb, and the preposition can precede a relative pronoun and appear at the beginning of a wh- question. He stared intently at the girl. The girl at whom he was staring was strikingly beautiful. At whom was he staring? (Ron Cowan, The Teachers Grammar of English. Cambridge University Press, 2008) Pronouncing Prepositional Verbs A prepositional verb consists of a verb plus a particle which is clearly a preposition: for example, look at, send for, rely on. These are mostly lexically singly stressed, with a primary stress going on the verb. Thus look at has the same stress pattern as edit or borrow. The second element, the preposition, being unstressed, does not get accented (unless for contrastive focus). (John Christopher Wells, English Intonation. Cambridge University Press, 2006) The Difference Between Phrasal Verbs and Prepositional Verbs There are a number of syntactic criteria you can use for distinguishing phrasal verbs from prepositional verbs: in transitive phrasal verbs, the particle is movable, but the preposition in a prepositional verb is not;the NP is the object of the verb in phrasal verbs rather than of the preposition;in both transitive and intransitive phrasal verbs, the particle carries stress, as in She took the cap off or The plane took off, while prepositions are unstressed, as in We knocked on the door.adverbials cannot intervene between the verb and the particle whereas they can between the verb and the preposition, *looked quickly up the information, but looked quickly into the oven.
